Monument to the Emigrants             Photo by: David A. Ashby

The "Monument to the Emigrants" is located on the island of Heimaey in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland.  It overlooks the "Mormon Pond" and the Atlantic Ocean.  The monument is in honor of the Icelanders that immigrated to Utah from 1854 to 1914.  The monument was dedicated on 30 June 2000, by Wm Rolf Kerr, Area President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  David Alan Ashby, President of the Icelandic Association of Utah, Inc. gave the monument to the people of Iceland.  Sigrun Inga Sigurfeirsdottir, President of the City Council, Vestmanneyjar, accepted the gift on behalf of the people of Iceland.

Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said of this monument; "You did a very significant thing. You people when you erected that monument on the Westmann Islands."
